DPACK Quick Start Guide

Team DPACK

Overview

Welcome to the DPACK portal.  DPACK provides an easy, non-intrusive way to collect, analyze and report performance data from virtually every IT environment.  Your DPACK data is ready to assist you in understanding your performance envelope and allow you to visually analyze how your resources are working for you.

Below are three easy steps for you to follow to get DPACK up and running on your IT infrastructure.

Step 1:  Download DPACK Collector Software

To begin using your DPACK account, you should first download the DPACK collector software by following these steps.

  1. Login to your DPACK portal account.  (http://dpack.dell.com)
  2. Click the "Download Collectors" button on the dashboard.
  3. Choose the correct version of the DPACK software and click the Download button for it.
  4. Once the file download has completed, extract the DPACK software, user guide, and additional documents to a directory on the computer where you wish to run it.

Step 2:  Run DPACK Collector Software

  1. Open DellPack directory and double-click DellPack.exe.
  2. Click the "Yes, I agree" button to accept the EULA.
  3. Confirm your name/company is listed on the DPACK User Identity screen and click the “Yes, this is me.” button.
  4. Click the "Ok" button to accept the default of connecting to the DPACK web services to auto-send your results (highly recommended).
  5. To add servers/computers to DPACK, click the "Add Remote Server" button
    • Select from Windows, VMware, or Linux servers
    • Enter the IP address/DNS name and click the “Connect” button
    • Enter login credentials, if prompted (typically admin/root access required)
  6. Click "Start Capture" button

The DPACK collector is now running and gathering performance data from your servers.

NOTE:  While DPACK is running, you cannot logoff nor reboot the computer that it is running on.  This will terminate DPACK before it has completed its collection schedule and could result in errors in the data.  We recommend that the computer running DPACK be locked during the collector run.

Step 3:  View DPACK Project

The DPACK portal will automatically create a project for collector runs that are streamed back to the DPACK servers.  TO access the DPACK project created for your collector run(s), follow these steps.

  1. Login to your DPACK portal account.  (http://dpack.dell.com)
  2. Scroll down the dashboard to "Recent Projects"
  3. You should see a new project ending with the date and time of when DPACK was started.
  4. Click the project name to review the DPACK report.

NOTE:  If you did not stream the DPACK collector data back to the DPACK servers, you will have to create your DPACK project.  To create your project, the following steps should be completed.

  1. Login to your DPACK portal account.  (http://dpack.dell.com)
  2. Click "Upload IOKIT"
  3. For first step of the upload process, click Browse and locate the SIOKIT file the DPACK software created.  Click Open.  (The normal location for SIOKIT files is within the DellPack folder).
  4. Provide a name for your DPACK project under "New Project Name".
  5. Click Upload SIOKIT.
  6. When prompted to be redirected to the project page, click "Yes".  You will be instantly taken to your DPACK project to begin reviewing your performance data.

Congratulations!!!  You have created your first DPACK project and are now able to view your performance data.  You can run DPACK as many times as you would like and create as many projects as you desire.  We encourage you to run it as often as you see fit to help you understand your current and future data resource usage.

DPACK How-To Video

The DPACK Team has also created a narrated tutorial embedded below demonstrating how to run the DPACK software on your computer, configure it with your servers, and being your collector run.
