DPACK-F User Guide


What is DPACK-F?

Unstructured data is one of the fastest growing data categories in the world.  DPACK-F (DPACK for File) is designed to bring insight to unstructured data through rapid File Characterization and reporting management.  IT professionals are able to provide PDF reports from DPACK-F containing information for useful suggestions focusing on data capacity utilization, de-duplication effectiveness, compression reduction percentage, and archiving.  

Getting Started With DPACK-F

 Login to DPACK the portal and open DPACK-F

DPACK-F is a fully integrated file scanning tool within the DPACK portal.  To access it, go to https://dpack.dell.com and login with your DPACK account credentials.  Once logged in, click on the "DPACK-F File Scan" button in the menu.  This will open DPACK-F within your DPACK dashboard.

Download and extract DPACK-F software

The DPACK-F collector software, just like the original DPACK software, is run locally from within an End User's data center.  Click on the "Download Collector" button to save the DPACK-F ZIP file locally to a computer. 



 Using any standard decompression software, extract all of the DPACK-F software files to any local directory so they look like the following example.


Run, configure, and start DPACK-F collector

The DPACK-F software executable, DpackF.exe, is memory resident and does not require any installation for it to run on any Windows operating system.  To begin running DPACK-F, you double-click DpackF.exe.  The following configuration window will popup and allow you to tailor DPACK-F to collect file based information from only the drives and paths specified.


 DPACK-F Configuration Settings

  • C: Drive:  Allows you to chose between the three most popular local drive settings for DPACK-F to scan (entire C: drive, User folders, and Program Data folders).
  • Additional Drives:  This list is dynamic and based upon any mapped drives that are connected to the server.  By default, all drives are selected and it does not matter what operating system is on the host end of the mapped drive.  DPACK-F uses SMB/CIFS to scan network drives at the host.
  • Custom Paths:  Allows you to either browse for other local drives that were not available in the first two configuration category or to enter a UNC path to a network drive on the network.  (Note:  You must click "Add Custom Path" to include the custom drive to DPACK-F)
  • DPACK-F Collector Settings:  DPACK-F is more memory and processor intensive that the standard DPACK software as it actively looks at file systems for all file and folder data on specified drives.  The amount of memory and processor threads can be set to increase or decrease the amount of compute resources DPACK-F can dedicate to the file scan.  (The amount of time DPACK-F takes to complete can be affected by the values set in this area)  This area is also where you can choose whether or not you would like for DPACK-F to test files for compressability or data de-duplication along with them percentage of files that will be tested.

NOTE:  Increasing the number of CPU threads or the amount of memory used by DPACK-F will consume a larger amount of performance resources on the computer running the DPACK-F collector software.

 DPACK-F Processing Drives

Once "Start Collection has been clicked, DPACK-F will begin scanning each of the drives listed in the configuration window and will run for as long as it takes to scan all drives, directories, and files.  During DPACK-F, a progress window will display the list of drives, number of files processed with total capaicty and the amount of memory currently in use by DPACK-F.  


If at any time during the processing of DPACK-F the operation needs to be terminated, the "Cancel Scan Operation" button will signal the program to stop processing and begin the end program operations to create the .DPACKF file.


Generating DPACK-F PDF Report

At the conclusion of DPACK-F processing, a DPACKF file will be generated.  The benefit of running DPACK-F is in the analysis provided in the PDF report.  To generate a DPACK-F report you will need to login to DPACK and click on the DPACK-F link again.  Clicking "Browse for .DPACKF File" will begin the process of uploading the DPACKF file and entering your contact information for in-report labeling.  If the PDF report is being generated for somebody else, their information should be entered in the optional Name and Email section.  Once all files and information is entered, click "Create PDF Report" and your report will be generated after a few minutes.
